How to Search for a Job

May 31, 2009 – 6:43 am

Welcome back!

You know the old saying “Look before you leap.”  Oddly, many people don’t heed this crucial advice when seeking a new job.  Make sure you do.  Just think:  Many employers hiring today are likely to put job candidates through interview paces not once, but three or four times.  Why shouldn’t you check them out as thoroughly as they do you?  A proper search takes time.  Specifically, job hunters who’ve already been in the workplace can today count on spending an average of one month on the interview circuit for every $10,000 they formerly earned.  Remember these tips the next time you’re ready to survey the employment terrain:

  • Tap your network of friends and associates to meet people working at companies that interest you. Reach out to everyone possible for “insider information” about the companies you’re keen on.  Career counselors figure that as many as 70% of all managerial or white-collar jobs are filled through the corporate grapevine, so it truly does pay to broadcast your situation to as many people as possible.  Even if you’re looking for an accountant’s job, someone working in, say, public relations or marketing at that office can give you a valuable tutorial.  Find out about a company’s corporate culture, job satisfaction rate, and general workload.  Are the managers flexible and open to new ideas or entrenched in their old ways?  Such queries can also clue you in about a company’s long-range business plans -which just might include a need for someone with your skills.
